Die Hauptstadt und zweitgrößte Stadt Ecuadors zählt ca. 1,4 Mio. Einwohner und erstreckt sich auf 50 km Länge, jedoch nur auf einer Breite von 4 km. Die am höchsten gelegene Hauptstadt der Welt befindet sich auf einer Höhe von 2800 m.
Den Namen des Landes verdankt Ecuador dem Äquator, der nur etwa 20 km südlich von Quito verläuft. Eingebettet ist Quito vom Vulkan „Pichincha“, der mit einer Seilbahn zu erreichen ist und von dem sich eine beeindruckende Sicht über die Stadt ergibt.
