Im Herzen von Nepal befindet sich das dicht besiedelte Kathmandutal, in welchem mehr als eine Million Menschen leben. Diese sind auf die drei hier liegenden Städte verteilt zu denen neben den Orten Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Madhyapur-Thimi und Kirtipur auch die nepalesische Hauptstadt Kathmandu zählt. Diese befindet sich direkt im Zentrum des Tales und ist mit Abstand die größte Stadt im Tal und im ganzen Land.
Zudem ist Kathmandu auch das politische und kulturelle Zentrum Neapels sowie ein sehr beliebtes Touristenziel. Letzteres ist die Stadt schon seit Jahrzehnten, bereits in den 60er Jahren kamen zahllose westeuropäische Reisende hierher, damals eher als Aussteiger denn als Touristen. Dies hatte auch damit zu tun, dass Kathmandu direkt am sogenannten Hippie Trail lag, eine Route die von Europa aus über Land nach Südostasien führte und zur damaligen Zeit bei Westeuropäern, Nordamerikaner und Australiern, die nach Sinn, Selbstfindung und Kommunikation mit anderen Völkern gesucht haben, sehr beliebt war.
Von diesem einstigen besonderen Flair ist heute in der pulsierenden Metropole nicht mehr viel zu spüren, die Stadt hat einiges an Zauber und Mystik eingebüßt. Und dennoch ist es lohnenswert die sagenumwobene Stadt zu besuchen. Denn von ihrer reichen Geschichte ist noch heute viel zu sehen. So gilt es zahlreiche Tempel, Heiligtümer und andere religiöse Bauwerke zu erkunden. Der Stadtteil Thamel ist zudem die Touristenhochburg, wo zumindest das Verlangen nach der Kommunikation mit anderen Völkern befriedigt werden kann.
